STEM learning<\/a> concepts do not have to be intimidating. You just need to gather a few materials to spark your child’s interest in the science behind the fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You’ll just need: Mentos and Diet Coke\u00a0<\/p>\n

This simple STEM Learning at home experiment that combines a sweetener with the Diet Coke causes lots of carbon dioxide bubbles to form on the surface very quickly and send a jet of bubbles shooting into the air.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How to Do It<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Engage your child by asking, \u201cWhat do you think causes bubbles?\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. Listen to your child\u2019s ideas and talk about things that make bubbles. You may want to look up\u00a0 videos online if she is curious to see other types chemical reactions.<\/li>\n
  3. Prepare your materials to make the mento explosion and make sure to wear safety goggles any time you are mixing the ingredients.<\/li>\n

    Step back and watch\u00a0a jet of bubbles shooting into the air.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Here are some guiding questions to help you build\u00a0 21st century learning skills, including collaboration, communication, creativity and problem solving, curiosity, and critical thinking,<\/p>\n

    Questions to keep your child engaged:<\/p>\n

    “I wonder what would happen if we tried different materials.”<\/p>\n

    How about we predict and make a hypothesis about what will happen. Test the hypothesis by using different by using different materials and chart what you discover.<\/p>\n
